Thailand Golfing Guide by Golf Tours & Academy of Asia
Fairways in heaven, a golfing paradise, the golfing world's best kept secret are just some of the descriptions to define the golfing destination of Thailand We agree with them all and wish only to add that whatever you may read about Thailand and its golf, the truth is these and other such exotic headlines frankly do not do it justice
We know of no other places where for $40 or less you are able to play courses designed by the likes of Nicklaus, Player, Faldo, Norman and Dye. To make your golfing day complete the golf courses have a bar every three holes, after your game, there is a spacious clubhouse in which to relax and drain your worst shots away.
You can play golf all year round - during winter in the high season from November to April when the weather is at its coolest and in the low season from May through October which can be the best time as there are only a few golfers on the courses.
What a life! Two out every three players who come to Thailand return - they must know something!
To state the obvious Thailand is a hot country and so before tackling your course please ensure that you have enough sun protection, even when there is cloud cover. Walk in the shade or take an umbrella. There are drink stops on most courses at every third hole, make use of them. Take some water (alcohol should be drunk in the clubhouse as it can dehydrate you, although if your game has been left behind who cares!). another tip is to take a little 'pinch' of salt with your drink, tastes terrible but really helps.
Enough of the lecture as golf here in Thailand is really an experience to be enjoyed, Usually the courses are surrounded by beautiful scenery, exotic trees and often colourful birds who aren't shot at over a golf course (except by some errant golf). Most courses have lovely caddies to look after you and they can really help make your day - they usually know the greens and can very quickly suggest the right club selection. Unless they have a bet with their mates and you are just having one of those days, you will get many happy smiles and encouragement, they are usually worth their tips of 150 à 200 baht. A round will take longer than in Europe allow 4 hours minimum, don't rush, and stop for those drinks.
At weekends, be prepared for a Thai 5 or 6 ball as is their way of playing. They aren't necessarily slow but may not let you through.
Dress Code
Short trousers and a shirt with a collar is the normal attire. Please no jeans and tee shirts. Golf shoes can still be spiked although more courses are insisting on soft studs. Trainers are accepted.
Handicaps & Beginners
Unless there is a competition nobody asks for a handicap certificate. If you are a beginner you are allowed on the course, please, for your own peace of mind and to learn the etiquette and rules, play with a golfer who does know and will help you. ( Become a member! )
